6:20-7:25 Web-based Watershed Inventory Systems Presentations

6:20-6:50  Watershed Information Model (WIM), Chris Glover, Western Shasta RCD http://wim.shastacollege.edu/ From Website: “Located in Northern California, the 4 million acre WIM study area is a collaborative partnership addressing management challenges and research opportunities in 18 different watersheds. The mission of WIM is to allow anyone with an interest in watershed management instant access to the best science education on local natural resources, quickly and efficiently. There is an increasing value in linking scientific research and education within the educational system and institutions of higher learning to promote an understanding of the processes and products of the scientific enterprise by citizens and enrich the educational experience at all levels of instruction. This project is about information development and exchange.”

6:55-7:25 Watershed Portal, David Siedband, Wolf & Associates http://www.wolfandassociates.com/web/watershed_portals.htm  From Web site: “As more organizations put information important to watersheds onto the web, the value of a local, uniting watershed web library grows. A web library is a repository for both the "card catalog" metadata information about resources and the individual documents and resources themselves. Different organizations can create their own "portals" into the library which organize and access the information to advance their own mission and goals. Critical to a portal's effectiveness are open source (public domain) software tools and an institutionalized effort to support its long-term maintenance. Unfortunately few organizational missions include direction to build and maintain a collaborative watershed web library. A good solution is for organizations in the watershed to unite in creating a new institutional structure that develops and maintains the local watershed library into which each can have their own portal. As part of the effort to build the Sacramento River Portal, Wolf and Associates developed a series of proposals for sponsorships, steering committee structure, strategic options, and an invitation and agenda for an initial meeting. These are available for public use under the Creative Commons License.”

7:30-7:50      SLEWS  Presentation, (Tba) From Website: “The SLEWS (Student and Landowner Education and Watershed Stewardship) program combines watershed-based education with watershed stewardship. SLEWS provides a diverse group of students with hands-on, place-based learning opportunities in order to cultivate stewardship, community and connection to the watershed. SLEWS program staff work closely with local partners and private landowners to engage students in the process of restoring wildlife habitat on farms, ranches and open spaces in the Putah-Cache Bioregion and in the San Joaquin Valley. Participating SLEWS schools commit to a year-long project that evolves from season to season according to the restoration cycle. Field trip activities might include seed collecting, plant propagation, planting native vegetation, building and installing bird boxes, removing invasive species, installing irrigation equipment and monitoring. Students also take part in ecological field studies focusing on the plants, animals, water quality or soil erosion at their site. We work with SLEWS teachers to determine how the program can best meet their needs, helping them to take advantage of their site as a place to introduce or emphasize classroom concepts. The SLEWS experience further serves to introduce students to possible careers in agriculture, education and natural resource conservation, while developing their skills as leaders.”
